The Social Justice Council continues to be busy. With new federal leadership changes ahead, our work is more important than ever. Here’s what we’re focusing on:
Upcoming Congregational Conversation
In January, Rev. Tony Lorenzen will lead a Congregational Conversation , with the support of the SJC. We will discuss how we can support those negatively impacted by upcoming policy shifts. Our goal is to facilitate an honest, open discussion about what we think is important, what we want to do, and what we can realistically handle. This promises to be one of our most critical conversations this year. We hope you’ll join us.
UU CT Social Justice Ministries
UU CT Social Justice Ministries (UU CT SJM) is a consortium of social justice groups of UU social justice groups from around the state. The steering committee, which took a hiatus in the fall so groups could concentrate on the election, will be resuming work this January. Nancy Burton currently represents UUCM on the UU CT SJM steering committee.
Welcome Core
UUCM has joined Welcome Core, an interfaith alliance to help welcome and settle a refugee family. Diane Szymaszek is UUCM’s representative on the local steering committee, which is working to support a family of six who will be arriving in Connecticut soon. A family of six—two parents and children ages 3, 9, 13, and 16—will arrive in Connecticut soon. Please donate coats and warm clothing or contribute through the GoFundMe page.
Learn more about Starfish: A New Neighborhood Partnership
The symbolism behind the name “Starfish” symbolizes resilience, hope, renewal, and connection.
- Resilience: Just as a starfish can regenerate, refugee families demonstrate immense strength as they rebuild their lives in a new country.
- Hope and Renewal: The starfish’s regenerative nature represents the hope of a fresh start for the refugee family—a chance to grow and thrive in a new environment.
- Connection: Starfish live in the ocean, a vast and interconnected ecosystem. This symbolizes the new connections refugee families will make in their new community, embracing diversity and becoming part of a broader supportive network.
Consider Joining SJC
Social justice activism has never been more important, and we are looking for new members. While we currently meet during the day, meeting times can be adjusted to accommodate more people.
