Meetings for the Social Justice Council have been changed to the second Wednesdays each month instead of the first Wednesday. Meetings start at 5PM.
The SJC continues to be active. We hosted an interfaith meeting this month at the church focusing on ways we can help support people in immigration detention and their families and the families of people who have been deported. The meeting was run by an immigration lawyer and several others involved in immigrant rights. It was extremely well attended. From this meeting three subcommittees were formed to focus on: 1. Clergy visits to detention centers; 2. Support for families of those in detention or deported; 3. Support for children and youth who have had parents/guardians detained or deported. These subcommittees will begin working on setting up mechanisms for this important work. Members of SJC are involved in additional groups supporting immigrants and will be submitting testimony at the state capital to support strengthening the Trust Act. We are also hoping to be involved with a door-to-door canvas in Meriden to hand out cards written in English and in Spanish that detail people's rights should ICE show up at their door or stop them somewhere. The cards also list an emergency phone number they can call for help. In addition, we made 250 flyers in English and Spanish with this information that have been distributed to area businesses for posting.
SJC continues to work closely with Meriden Pride to support their activities and support members of the LGBTQ+ community. Meriden Pride has several activities in the works. One opportunity members of this congregation recently had to support them is to march with them in the St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday, March 22.
